Job hunting is almost a hobby with me, long before there was a recession or any job insecurity, I liked to scan the help wanted ads to see what was out there. I suffer from versatility - I can do almost anything - except sing in tune or dance in step, but I do not have a particular thing that I must do - except help others.

I know I am not alone in this, if you are a salesperson there are so many opportunities out there, but which ones actually pay? They all do, it's just that you may not be the person who is getting paid. I have failed and succeeded and failed and succeeded at sales. Even when I have failed and could criticise the company for posting a misleading advertisement for a sales position - I have to stand back and look, because somewhere in the office that I was working in, there was a successful sales person who was earning everything promised by the employer.

There is always a top dog!
I have read so many books on sales, on positive thinking, on being successful and still I have not managed to be a success at every sales position that I have taken. I have worked over the phone successfully and unsuccessfully - vacation packages, technical education, life coaching, wine; I have sold face to face, successfully and unsuccessfully - timeshare, dating agency, interior design, janitorial services.

I listen to the motivational CD's on my way to work, I rehearse my pitch, I sound cheerful and positive, I work hard, I say the right things, I mirror, I use NLP and yet sometimes I still cannot sell a product. I finally found the answer to my sales woes - Belief!

Belief in the product, an unwavering faith that I am selling the customer something that I truly believe in and I truly think that their lives will be better if they purchase my product. I am selling something that is better than the competition, I am going to take better care of my customers than the competition and I will do whatever is necessary to make their experience a happy and positive one. My product is worth the money, my customers are protected and will recommend me to their friends. If I feel that way about a product, I can sell it!

Find a product that you believe in!
How to find the right product for your sales career. Research the company, Google the company name followed by the word "Scam" and get all the dirt before you go to the job interview. I know this sounds really negative but your reaction to the information will tell you how strong your belief is in that product. Remember, only dissatisfied customers publish their rants online and the bigger the company, the more rants you will read. Some will be entirely justified, nobody gets everything right all of the time. Analyse what the complaints are about, perhaps the company has responded to those complaints and there is no longer and issue.
Go to your interview armed with questions, talk about your concerns, this shows that you are really interested in the job and the company, do not be negative, just be fact finding.

Hmmm! No comment!
If you think the product may be okay - go to the training, did the training manager convince you that the products are great? How do you feel about the product now? If you have learned to love the product now, you are going to succeed at selling it, it is all about passion and emotion.
The great thing about this approach is that no-one at work can be neg you out because you are already informed about the product and you have a balanced view. You know what the product is and how to be a success!

So successful that they will think that you walk on water!
