Before you do any psychic work, the first step is to prepare yourself. In a previous post, The Daily Psychic Work Out I described how you need to do a warm-up before a reading and a cool down afterwards. This post explains how to do a psychic warm-up before you do a reading. You may be reading tarot cards or casting the runes or something else, the process is the same.
Step 1. Find your materials - tarot cards, runes and rune cloth or whatever device you have chosen.
Step 2. Choose your space - make sure that you have somewhere quiet to sit, a comfortable chair, a table or floor to spread your cards or runes. The temperature should be comfortable - in order to have a successful reading you should have as few distractions as possible.
Step 3. Make sure that you are physically comfortable and relaxed. Turn off devices that may distract you.
Step 4. Sit down and take a few deep breaths, count as you breath in and out slowly. You want to slow down your breaths. Breathe in for 8, hold for 2 and breathe out for 8. It is best for you to decide how fast and high that you count, whatever works for you.
Step 5. Keep taking slow relaxing breaths, become aware of any areas in your body that are causing tension. Breathe into those areas and relax as you breath out. This process may take a few minutes.
Step 6. Go to your quiet mind space. This may be an imaginary room that you have created for yourself or it may be a place where you meet and converse with your spirit guide who will help you with the reading. Everyone has a different place that they go to, sometimes your mind will take you to different places. The important thing is that you are in the quiet space where you can pick up ideas, suggestions, solutions.
Step 7. Be open, some people have visions, some people hear voices, some people feel sensations or are aware of odors and some people do a little of each. When you are calm and have brushed away your thoughts about the day, you are ready to do a reading.
Doing the psychic warm -up can take a while when you start out, it may take 20 minutes. The more you practice the easier it becomes, and so you may be able to warm up in one or two minutes.

I am not a cartoon psychic, I cannot tell the future with complete accuracy, I cannot read people's minds or see through playing cards when somebody holds them up nor would I want to. When I write about the psychic workout I am not promising to turn practitioners into psychics. The psychic workout is a way of enhancing intuition and creating stillness so that the mind can work.
What do I mean by the psychic workout?
I noticed that in yoga class, in intuitive development class and in hypnosis training, I was taught to do the same basic thing. Which was to get into a relaxed and receptive state of mind. The methods of achieving this state vary from teacher to teacher, in yoga you may be lying on the floor or sitting cross legged and concentrating on your physical being, in hypnosis the emphasis is on the mind, in intuitive development the focus is on gathering messages. Thinking about this I realized that this technique, the "psychic workout" can be used for many things. The difference was intention.
If you get into a meditative state, it is a good idea to have an agenda, whether it is to meet spirit guides, make changes to behavior or to find answers to questions the intention is different, the technique is the same.
Who should do the psychic workout?
Everyone should do the psychic workout. Intuition is important for survival and meditation reduces stress. People who are creative benefit from attaining a meditative state, musicians, dancers, writers, artists, fashion designers. The psychic state enables people to think of new ideas, unique answers to problems. do you ever feel that you do your best thinking in the middle of the night? Creative ideas come when you are relaxed and free of distractions.
You may have heard that everyone is psychic, you may or may not believe this. What if it is true? What if you have extra sensory perception but you are not using it? What if developing ESP is like learning to ride a bike, dance the foxtrot or play baseball? The reason that you do not have ESP is because you don't know how to access it. What if psychic ability is a hidden ability that all humans have but if you do not use it, it will wither away. Young children can be very psychic but parents are often uncomfortable with this and will explain premonitions and visions away. Even if you do not develop psychic powers, relaxing and unplugging can make you feel good!
So, what is the point of developing your psychic abilities anyway? It probably will not help you to win the lottery, to read peoples minds or to have a complete picture of everything that is going to happen in the future but it might give you some help. Perhaps you are excellent at reading people, understanding situations and making decisions. Perhaps you have a perfect plan for your life and you do not need or seek extra insight - that is wonderful! I mentioned earlier that developing psychic powers is like learning baseball, it is not likely that you will be amazing at it without regular practice but the good thing is that you do not need to be young or fit, you do not need a team of players and you do not need to spend money to practice the psychic workout. Step one - put pen and paper next to the bed and be ready to scribble down everything you remember about your dreams. Do this the moment that you wake up.
Questions to ask yourself - How did the dream make me feel?
Is this a recurring dream?
Have I been to this place before?
Did I experience dream memory?
Who was in the dream with me?
What was my relationship with the people, animals, things?
Was there a specific message? Write down any words that come to mind.
Has this dream affected my mood?
Were there lots of things in the dream related to what I did yesterday?
Step 2.
Interpret the Dream.
You can look up meanings of some of the major things in your dream. Use this information to see if the interpretation rings true to you or if your relationship with that element of the dream is different from the dictionary suggestion. Your feelings are really the most important thing. Were you running away from something, being deceptive, were you embarrassed?

Step 3.
Repeat this exercise every time that you remember a dream.
Your dream workout is a simple way for you to get in touch with your subconscious mind and to tap into your intuitive self. It is a way for you to receive messages and for you to develop your psychic muscles. If you are not having many dreams you can always ask friends and family to tell you about their dreams so that you can practice interpreting their dreams too.
2. Reading Cards and Symbols
We are surrounded by millions of things and our brains have to select which things we pay attention to. Have you ever noticed that there are patterns, you may keep seeing the same numbers, or noticing shapes in the clouds or see faces in your floorboards.
Tarot cards, runes and numerology are methods that you may use to help unlock messages. Is your mind or the universe trying to send you a message, to give you some advice or to keep you on track?
The cards are a key to understanding what is happening around the querent. When you ask a question, the cards will show what will happen if you stay on the current path. Tarot readers use many different layouts to read the cards, like most people I use the Celtic Cross. A three card spread is also useful -past present and future which can provide information about a situation. The three card spread is a much easier way to learn to read cards.
Every card has a meaning and learning to interpret cards can take a while. There are several meanings and key words for each card and so it is important to look at the picture on the card and use intuition to think about what this card means in this context. The meanings of the cards change based on the querent, the position of the card and the question.
Set a target each week to learn one or two cards, this is good practice for your psychic work out. I have included my tarot poems in the blog, these are useful for memorizing meanings.
You will become more comfortable with the cards the more you practice and the more you listen to your intuition.
Runes
These are part of the old norse alphabet, special letters that have multiple meanings. I have found runes to be very powerful. You can purchase runes or create your own using wood or stones. This blog will contain posts about reading the runes. It is also possible to write spells using runes. Numerology
In numerology it is possible to break down names and use birth dates to understand events, predict future events and understand personal characteristics. Numerology is an amazing subject and can be very effective. This subject is way too big for my humble blog but I have written about the meanings of various numbers because they also appear on tarot cards and in dreams and daily life.
Mind control can be learned in many different ways and there are many factors that will influence how successful you are at this. As I stated earlier psychic power takes practice and unlike reading cards and interpreting dreams where there are reference books to guide you, mind control is something that you just have to practice.
I refer to mind control as your aerobic exercise, it is something that takes a lot of effort initially but becomes easier the more you practice, your stamina will build over time.
Meditation
Meditation has become very popular over recent years, especially associated with yoga and mindfulness. In meditation you quieten your mind. Learning to subdue your noisy thoughts. allows your mind to become aware of other things. You can use guided meditation or set an intention to tap into psychic thoughts. You may have visions, take interesting psychic journeys or connect with spirit guides. This blog covers some of my favorite guided meditations.
Self hypnosis is another way of developing mind control, it can work in a similar way to meditation. Self hypnosis can be used for problem solving and mastery of new subjects. This is an important psychic practice to enable you to unplug and de-stress.
There is a sense of joy in being connected to the earth and to the universe through being aware of our actions and how every decision that we make impacts others. By truly being mindful and by being a light in the universe we are able to use our powers to make this world better. I believe it is important to understand the interconnectedness of our actions so that we can help each other, open our minds and our eyes and listen to the heartbeat of the cosmos. Mindfulness and psychic abilities are interconnected, it seems as if developing the sensitivity to read yourself and others also creates a desire to love and protect the earth.
Workouts always begin with a warm up and your psychic workout begins the same way. As you become more experienced it is easier to slip into an enhanced receptive state but initially it is important to prepare yourself.
This is a little paradoxical, a psychic warm up could be considered a cool down from your daily activities. The first thing to do is to turn off any devices that may interrupt you or distract you from your psychic time. Find a place that is comfortable and relatively quiet, you do not need to lie down to do this, especially if you are about to read tarot cards for someone!
Take some deep breaths, breathe in deeply and let the breath out slowly letting all our random thoughts out of your head as you breathe out. Breathe in fresh ideas and clean air, breathe out dust and distraction. Breathe in and count to ten, breathe out and count backwards from ten. You need to do this at your own pace, until you are in a good empty space. (I have found that some guided meditations breathe too fast or too slow for me.)
Relax your muscles and let go off any tension, brush away any thoughts that are to do with daily activities and your "to do" list. Detach from yourself and watch those thoughts drift away, at this moment they are nothing. Create a sense of inner peace and allow your mind to become engaged with the universe. It sounds weird to say this but there is a place your mind will go to find peace. You may use a guided meditation to create this space for yourself or you may find that your mind always visits a certain place.
At this point you should be ready for your psychic work out whether it is card reading, dream interpretation or doing a deeper meditation to answer a question. If you are new to meditation, this process can take a while, be patient with yourself and know that like everything in life it gets easier with practice. You will reach a point where you can just switch quickly into a meditative state with little preparation.

The Psychic Cool Down
After any psychic session you may be feeling a little detached from everyday activities so it is a good idea to re-connect. Gradually become more aware of the things around you, the sounds, the temperature, the light. If your eyes have been closed then open them slowly and readjust your vision. Take some more deep breaths and say, "I am awake, I am refreshed and I am ready". Allow your body to wake up, shrug your shoulders, move your head, your fingers and toes. Breathe in deeply once more. You are now both relaxed and awake and ready for action.
