Last night after dance we were discussing why dance makes us feel so good and one student mentioned that dance opens the chakras, I found this great article: Does Bellydance affect the chakras? It is so true that bellydance can help you to make positive changes in your life. I started dancing at a time in my life when I was depressed and lacking in confidence, dance certainly helped me to feel better.
It doesn't matter how well you dance, you dance for yourself. Here is a poem that I wrote about this.
Dance for Me
There were no performance nerves as she gracefully took the floor
No goggle eyed supporters waiting behind the door
The room was almost silent when the beat began to hit
She takes a breath and starts to move and smiles a little bit
Perfectly poised, she floats around the space
She spins to left and right with pleasure on her face
Her body sways, her movements flow,
her arms and legs and hips also
so many steps, around and round,
Her feet they barely touch the ground
And when at last the song is over
She curtsies first and then bends over
An enormous stretch for all to see.
She moves each muscle separately.
There’s no applause, and no ovation
She does not seek appreciation
Breathing in the silent air,
Smiling as she combs her hair
Her style unique
Her strange physique
May not be made for shows
She doesn’t care
She’s well aware
and happy for she knows
She does not dance for you or me
her crazy choreography
She says aloud is made for me.
She grins and spins and skips away
‘I dance for me,” the echoes say.
The room exhales, an empty home,
awaits tomorrow’s show
For even when you dance alone,
Someone will always know.
